Ask God a Question

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. -James 1:5

I fear that too often when we have questions about God we ask Google before we ever ask God Himself. I know I have been guilty of this myself. I think the root of this issue is not that God has stopped speaking, but more that we have lost patience in waiting for Him to speak. We live in the information age and we want answers fast! But God does not always answer fast. Many times in scripture we are told to “wait on the Lord” (Psalm 27:14, Psalm 37:7, Isaiah 40:31, Lam 3:25) but when we wait more than 10 minutes for anything in our culture we have people sighing, stomping their feet and checking their cell phones for the time. We want our answers now, our blessings now and our healings now! Abraham waited 25 years for Isaac to be born. Moses tended sheep in the desert for 40 years before God called Him to free the Israelites. Jesus worked as a carpenter until the age of 30 before He started His ministry. I’m not saying every question you ask God you have to wait 40 years for an answer—although I’m not saying you won’t either—but we do have to wait to hear His voice. This could be a day, a week, a month or even years. But I encourage you to ask Him questions because He does answer and I think you’ll be surprised in the creative personal ways that He will.

I have not received an answer for every question I’ve asked God but many I have. He often likes to answer in different ways (other than an audible voice, although He did answer me once in an audible voice which you can read about here) and He usually incorporates scripture. Here’s an example of a conversation I had with God recently over the course of a month or so.

I was reading my Mom’s book The Key to His Heart where she goes in depth about her personal relationship with Jesus. This stirred my spirit to start this conversation:

I asked God, “How can I know you more personally?”
He appeared to me in a dream that night and said, “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see Me.” (Matt 5:8)

I asked God, “How do I make my heart pure?”
He replied by speaking through the pastor at a church I went to that week who spoke on Ephesians 5:26:
“that He [Jesus] might sanctify [purify] and cleanse her [the church=us] by the washing of water by the word.” The pastor actually said at one point, “It is the word of God that purifies us.”

Now I was a little confused. It sounded to me as if God was saying I am already pure, or if I just read the Bible then I’m pure. So I asked Him again, “What do you mean by this Lord?” Later that week in my private time I was led by the Holy Spirit to read John chapter 15 and there it was: “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.” (John 15:3)

You see the whole time I was trying to figure out what I could do to earn God’s favor and become pure in His eyes, when the whole time He kept saying back to me that He had already done it. It was finished on the cross!

Then just to drill the point home God answered my original question again through prophetic word spoken over me a couple weeks later where they gave me this verse: “Who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart…” (Psalm 24:3-4) They told me I am on fire for God and it’s true—I am on fire for God and I wish for you to have that same fire! That fire started off as a spark but became full blaze by getting to know Him, and the best way you can get to know someone is by hanging out with them and asking questions. So I encourage you to ask God a question. Start up a conversation but please be open-minded in the ways that He may answer, because He almost never does things the way we expect Him to.
